Project Overview
The Tarsal Data Dashboard needed reimagining. As the lead product designer, I transformed a usage-focused interface into a narrative-driven dashboard that helps users understand their cloud data connections and flows. This case study showcases how strategic UX thinking can elevate a technical product from merely showing data to telling a meaningful story.
The Challenge
The original dashboard suffered from a critical flaw: it was focused on usage metrics rather than communicating value to users. Key issues included:
- Lack of narrative structure, making it difficult for users to draw meaningful insights
- Excessive focus on raw usage data without contextual information
- Limited visualization options that failed to highlight patterns and relationships
- No clear hierarchy of information or guided user journey
- No sense of the value the Tarsal product provided users
My Approach
Discovery & Research
I conducted interviews with subject matter experts (SMEs) and stakeholders to understand:
- What questions users were truly trying to answer through the dashboard
- Which metrics actually mattered to decision-making
- How users interpreted the current visualizations
Design Process
- Collaborative Ideation: Led whiteboarding sessions with SMEs to sketch potential visualization approaches
- Wireframing: Created low-fidelity wireframes exploring different narrative structures
- Engineering Collaboration: Worked closely with developers to determine technical feasibility and prioritize features based on available data and development capacity
- High-Fidelity Design: Leveraged the Tarsal design library (which I had previously established) to create consistent, polished mockups
- Validation: Presented designs to SMEs and customers for feedback and refinement
The Solution
The redesigned dashboard transforms raw data into meaningful insights through:
- Narrative Structure: Reorganized the interface to tell a cohesive story about data movement
- Contextual Metrics: Shifted focus from abstract usage to concrete value metrics
- Enhanced Visualizations: Introduced more effective chart types including sinusoidal trend lines, horizontal bar comparisons, and a delay distribution chart
- System Status Overview: Added clear indicators of warnings and errors to quickly identify issues
- Field-Level Insights: Provided deeper visibility into data structure and volume
Key Improvements
From Usage to Value
The original dashboard answered “How much?” but failed to address “So what?” The redesign directly addresses business questions users care about:
- Which connectors are moving the most data?
- Where are bottlenecks occurring?
- How is performance trending over time?
- What field-level insights can inform optimization?
Visual Clarity
The redesign employs thoughtful data visualization techniques:
- Consistent color coding across connector types
- Better use of space with dedicated panels for different metric types
- Clear labeling and contextual information
- Improved hierarchy highlighting the most important information
Technical Realities
Working within technical constraints, I prioritized visualizations that:
- Utilized available data effectively without requiring extensive new data collection
- Balanced development effort with user value
- Maintained performance while displaying complex visualizations
Results & Impact
While formal metrics weren’t collected, user feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The redesigned dashboard successfully:
- Transformed perception of the product from a technical utility to a valuable insight tool
- Improved users’ ability to quickly understand system status and performance
- Enhanced the product’s perceived sophistication and completeness
- Supported better decision-making through clearer visualization of trends and patterns
Lessons Learned
This project reinforced a fundamental principle of data visualization design: dashboards must tell the right story. No matter how visually appealing, a dashboard fails if it doesn’t answer the questions users care about most.
The experience highlighted the importance of:
